30 questions for couples, for whatever mood you’re in
You don’t need a special occasion to ask something new. A quiet dinner, a long drive or ten minutes on the sofa will do. These questions for couples start with easy choices and move toward things you might not know about each other. There is no score and no right answer.
How to use these questions
Choose one section that fits your mood. Each person answers the same question before you move on. Pick three questions if you only have a few minutes; choose one from each section if you want a longer chat. If an answer surprises you, stay with it instead of rushing through the list.
Start with something fun
These are for when you want a laugh, a silly argument or a story you haven’t heard before. Short answers are welcome. You can always ask what made someone choose that.
- If we opened a tiny shop together, what would we sell?
- What completely useless skill would you love to master?
- Which meal could you eat three days in a row?
- If our relationship were a TV show, what would its title be?
- Which of us would last longer on a camping trip without a phone?
- What would you buy first with an unexpected $100?
- Which fictional couple would be terrible neighbours?
- What is the funniest thing you believed as a kid?
- What song would you secretly choose for our entrance music?
- If we swapped jobs for a day, what would go wrong first?
Want to turn this into a game? Guess your partner’s answer before they say it. Compare the guesses, then let them tell the full story. The surprising answers are usually the most fun.
Notice the everyday stuff
Small habits can be easy to miss, even when you spend a lot of time together. These questions are about the parts of a normal week that make life nicer, stranger or more tiring.
- What little thing makes a bad day better for you?
- When do you most like having time to yourself?
- What do I do that makes you feel appreciated?
- What household job would you happily never do again?
- What would your ideal ordinary Sunday look like?
- Which part of our routine would you like to change?
- What is something you wish we did more often together?
- When you get home tired, what do you want first?
- What cheap treat always feels worth it to you?
- Which of our little traditions should we keep forever?
A useful follow-up is “What would that look like this week?” It turns a vague wish, like more time together, into something you can actually picture. You don’t need to turn every answer into a task.
Look a little further ahead
You don’t have to agree on a five-year plan. Start with things you are curious about and ideas you have not said out loud yet. Plans can change; tonight’s answer is just where you are now.
- What would you like us to try for the first time this year?
- Where could you imagine living for a few months?
- What do you want more time for in the next year?
- What is one thing you hope we still do when we’re old?
- What would make our home feel more like us?
- Which dream have you put off for a long time?
- What kind of trip would you like us to save for?
- What would you like to learn together?
- What does a good life together look like on an ordinary day?
- What is one small thing we could look forward to next month?
If a question feels too big, make it smaller: “What about this month?” You can also return to the same question later and see which answers have changed.
Make it your own
For a new relationship, start with the fun section and swap stories. If you’ve been together for years, try the everyday questions without answering for each other. Familiarity makes guessing tempting, but hearing the answer in your partner’s own words is the point.
